  • Manual vs Automatic PRV:  “Automatic PRV: sounds better than “Manual PRV”, but in my opinion, the opposite is true.  Both styles, generally, automatically vent at a set pressure for safety reasons.  Manual PRVs at the ability to…. manually activate the PRV.  That allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.  A tool is required to vent lids without manual PRV valves.
  • Works with both pin and ball lock kegs: In most cases, Pin lock and ball lock cornelius style keg lids are interchangeable from a size perspective.  That means you can, generally speaking, put a pepsi/ball lock style (manual prv) lid on a coke/pin lock style (no manual prv) keg.
  • An upgrade to pin lock style lids: In my book, that’s a solid upgrade.  See: What’s the Difference Between Ball Lock Kegs and Pin Lock Kegs?

Having the ability to precisely control fermentation temperatures was the change to my brewing setup I credit with one of the largest improvements in my finished beer quality. Being able to dial in specific temperatures for lagers, perform diacetyl rests for both ales and lagers, and cold crash a finished beer helped me to better control what was happening inside my fermenter. One of the data inputs that informed when to change the fermenter temperature was the gravity of the fermenting wort. At various times through the fermentation, I would test a sample to know where the wort was on its journey to become beer. Taking multiple samples was time consuming and it resulted in a loss, albeit a small loss, of the finished product due to the number of samples I was taking.

Enter the electronic, submersible hydrometer – a tool that can read out not only the gravity of a fermenting liquid, but also its temperature all from inside the fermenter, relieving the need to take numerous samples throughout the fermentation process. In addition, many of these devices could connect to an external source and log the data for the user to read in real-time. The brewer and technologist in me were both excited to see what one of these tools had to offer.

The iSpindel is one of a few offerings to homebrewers today in the category of an electronic, submersible hydrometer which also include the Tilt and Float products (I do have experience with the Tilt, which I will discuss later, but will focus on the iSpindel primarily in this review). All products rely on a sensor that can measure the angle of the device in order to calculate the gravity of the liquid. The iSpindel was born out of a desire to make a more cost-effective version of an electronic tilt measurement-based hydrometer, according to the creator, as the other offerings on the market are typically above the $100 mark.

Stainless Steel Float with 60CM Silicone Dip Tube Replacement_Kit for Fermenter

My explanation of how these works…

When we carbonate a keg, pressure is being applied to the keg from the top, via the head space. Beer at the top carbonates first. That carbonation works it’s way down the keg. I’m sure there’s also some movement in the keg that helps to mix things up and distribute carbonation. But just sitting there, I think that mixing is a slow process. However it all works, practically speaking, the beer at the top carbonates more quickly compared to the beer at the bottom. This allows you to serve from the top accessing the more carbonated portion of the keg. It’s also a benefit for clarity because trub settles out heading downward. You can see this stratification in a glass carboy. As the beer starts to clear, the top clears first. I don’t think if this is exactly accurate, but I picture carbonation happening with the same sort of stratification until the beer reaches equilibrium and is equally carbonated throughout.

I bought this last time I featured it on Homebrew Finds at $20.39 which I consider a bargain. I haven’t used it yet but it’s a really… cool (did you see what I did there) cooler in a great size. Definitely a cooler as a cooler sort of thing, I don’t see it being used for a mash tun, but super neat to carry your homebrew and other stuff around in, especially at this price.

You can increase the temperature of your ferment from 5-20 degrees Fahrenheit.
