I use my homebrew pump for vorlaufing/recirculating, transferring from my mash tun to brew kettle, chilling with a recirculating wort chiller and transferring to my fermenter.  You could also use a brewing pump to recirculate ice water for your wort chiller.  Pumps are a necessity if you want to use a plate chiller.  You really need one to properly clean and sanitize your plate chiller.

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Do you need a pump to transfer your fermented beer or wine? Leave your fermenter on the ground and save your back with the KegLand Transfer Pump.  This 12 volt pump is self priming, and will pull beer or wine out of a fermenter into a secondary or your keg. It has a maximum flow of 1.2 gallons per minute, and will lift fluids up to 12½’ (although the higher the lift, the less gallons per minute).  Can generate up to 90 PSI pressure and 5″ of suction.  A 110 volt transformer is included so you can plug this in anywhere.

It features 3/8″ (10mm) hose barbs for attaching 3/8″ interior diameter tubing (our item E04, sold per foot), and a built in switch on the cord for easy access. Hose clamps are recommended for secure leak free tubing connection when pumping, our item D41 works well. Use with our 24″ Siphon Tube E77 along with the E04 tubing for your own transfer system. Flexible vibration dampening feet with screw holes let you mount this without worrying about excess rattling. The pump body is 6½” long, 3″ wide, with an overall power cord length of 7′.

Not for hot wort, recommended maximum fluid temperature is 135° F. Not for solutions with debris like seeds, whole hop particles, or grape skins which can clog the pump.

Hands on Review: Chugger Pumps X-Dry Series Homebrew Pump

This review is by Homebrew Finds Reader Benji S.  Benji has been brewing for 10 years.  His favorite style is Festbier.  He’s an all grain brewer and member of WIZA (Whidbey Island Zymurgy Association).  Check him out on Instagram at neon_hop

Making beer is all-together extremely fun, rewarding, messy, and labor intensive. Want an example? Look no further than the need to transfer large volumes of liquid, at varying temperatures, between and through multiple containers. Mashing, sparging, boiling, racking, and cleaning all require gallons of liquid transfer. Liquid is both heavy and resistant to being easily moved around en masse. Introducing new equipment into your brew day can often mean finding new and interesting ways you now have to fight against both of these obstacles. Having recently acquired a Spike CF5 conical, I’ve found myself in this exact position, often wondering “How do I even fill and clean this thing effectively?”. In terms of equipment, adding a Brewing pump to the equation has become the de facto ways to help answer these questions.

My Homebrew Pump Selection Criteria

I’ve been brewing for well over a decade, but using a pump in the process is new to me. Approaching a new piece of equipment requires some evaluation of what you want it to do, what expectations you have for how it will work, and what your budget will be to balance against. The feature set I arrived on during my search largely came down to this:
Stainless Steel head to reduce the chance for plastic pieces from rubbing of the propeller
Head assembly should be fairly easy to take apart to aid in cleaning

  • 1/2” NPT connections on the ports, as I already had 1/2” connectors to convert them to quick disconnects
  • At least 3” of cord length as the power outlets tend to be a bit far away where I typically brew
  • Needs to be 115v
  • Price range of $100-150
  • Targeted Uses (in order of importance): CIP cleaning of my conical, transferring from the kettle to the conical, fly sparging

Convert Your Chugger or March Homebrew Pump to Tri-Clamp Fittings

Upgrading your Chugger or March Pump to Tri-Clamp style disconnects is as easy as getting the right fittings.

Generally speaking, you’re going to be looking for a tri-clamp to FPT/Female NPT threading. Many pumps have 1/2″ threads and many homebrewers standardize on 1.5″ TC.

Announcing: KegLand TC Breakdown Tri Clamp Pump!

KegLand TC Breakdown Tri Clamp Pump

KegLand TC Breakdown Tri Clamp Pump from William’s Brewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The KegLand TC Breakdown pump features a type 304 stainless head held on with a 3” Tri Clamp, making it easy to service and remove any spent grain or hop material that may cause a blockage. It features an inline design with 1.5″ Tri Clamp in and out fittings. The Tri Clamp head allows the head to be set at any angle, making it even easier to integrate into your system.

A corny keg compatible PRV valve with pull ring is screwed into the head so you can quickly perge the head to eliminate cavitation, and also acts as a safety valve so you cannot over pressurize your system. Best of all, you can replace it if needed with any corny compatible relief valve.

This 25 watt pump runs on 110 volts, and will pump up to 5 gallons per minute to a height of 11 feet. This performance is based on minimal lift, and keep in mind the higher you pump, the less gallons per minute.
