This ball lock QD has an integrated check valve. This keeps beer from backflowing into your gas lines. That’s handy in any installation, but I specifically recommend this style of gas QD for DuoTight Installations as they allow you to skip inline check fittings and really clean up your setup. How Often Should You Clean Lines?

The Draught Quality Beer Manual says… every two weeks.

That recommendation is for a commercial operation. What about homebrewers? We serve far fewer beer on our kegerators, but on the other hand, we can have been on tap and in lines 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Considering all of this, my recommendation is every 1 to 2 months.

What Does Reconditioned/Rebuilt Mean?

The short answer is probably… nothing. I think reconditioned/rebuilt/refurbished are basically synonyms and there is no standard definition for any of these terms.

Here are the different definitions I’ve seen from different retailers via their offerings:

The keg is untouched, but is in okay shape and holds pressure. In this case, reconditioned means… the keg works.
The keg has had been tested and had faulty parts replaced. In this case, reconditioned means, we did the minimum to get the keg working.
All o-rings have been replaced and any faulty parts have been replaced. In this case, reconditioned means… reconditioned.
All o-rings have been replaced and any faulty parts have been replaced and the keg has been cleaned. In this case reconditioned means reconditioned and cleaned.

Examples of Keg Conditions from MoreBeer

Used Cornelius Keg – Ball Lock 5 gal. KEG430 – these are raw kegs – no cleaning, no rebuild, sold “as is” < This is the keg offering that’s rebuilt in this post

What’s Going On With Keg Prices and Availability?

I have an article on this that explains this in detail and details our situation as it has unfolded. The short answer is… bulk availability of used kegs has become a thing of the past. I could provided you with a lot of reasoning behind that, but one illustration I can give you is that AIH has COMPLETELY REMOVED pages for their used ball lock offerings both singles and four packs. Over the years, these offerings had been some of the most reliable and have often been the best deal around.

$30 kegs are gone. Even if a large cache of used kegs are found in I don’t think we’re going to even come close to the prices we saw 10 years ago. Why would someone sell kegs for $30 or $40 when $80 or $90 is the going rate?

Why a Temp Controller?

Temperature controllers, sometimes referred to as over-riding thermostats, can control devices like refrigerators, freezers and fermentation heating devices to provide a consistent temperature for your kegerator, fermentation chamber or brew system. Additional Information on Our Refurbished Kegs:
Though these kegs are pre-owned, they may exhibit minor cosmetic imperfections such as small dings and scratches that couldn’t be completely polished away. None of these issues impact their functionality.

The fact is… the era of cheap and readily available used homebrew kegs is… done. I could give you a bunch of reasoning behind that opinion including one of the best sources for used kegs… de-listing used kegs, but I’ve got a regularly updated article on the topic you can check out.

In my opinion the original ITC-308 was and is a game changer as far as homebrew temp controllers. In comparison to available controllers available at the time the ITC-308 was released, it offered loads more features, including dual stage control, for a fraction of the price. Game changer! The addition of Wi-Fi control and monitoring to this great controller has made a great temp controller even better. Check out our Hands on Review of the ITC-308. Potential Uses:

PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers. Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew. Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport. This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer. Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2. Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.
