Hands on Review: Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler for Forward Sealing Faucets – new updates

Tapcooler Bottle Filler

Sometimes it’s possible to go in a circle, but still be moving forward. For me, that’s occurred with bottling. Like most, I started homebrewing by bottling everything. But I got tired of peeling labels, washing bottles, and the overall chore of bottling 5 gallons of beer from a bucket with a gravity fed bottle filler. So I switched, and have been kegging ever since. The one drawback is it’s not as easily shared with others. I’ve got a few great pressurized growlers that solve my problem for bringing some along to a party, but I didn’t have a good solution for passing on a couple pints to friends or neighbors.

A small company in Norway (just 2 people), called Tapcooler, has created a product that is specifically designed for homebrewers that keg their beer, but want to be able to share it in bottles. They improved upon a similar design on the market by adding the functionality of CO2 purging to a counterpressure bottle filler. Their product was met with great feedback from homebrewers in Norway, and now they export it globally. You can use it to save the last few pints when a keg is getting low and you need space, want to share beer with a friend, or want to send in beer to a homebrew competition. Their bottle filler is different than your typical beer gun, in that it’s specifically designed to connect to your tap, and it’s also designed to fill with back pressure in the bottle so you don’t lose most of your CO2 when filling.

Cannular Bench Top Can Seamer

The Cannular is a manual can seamer that is easy to use, reliable, and beautifully simple.

Whether you’re a brewery looking to offer canned beer to go or a homebrewer wanting to keep your creations fresh and fully protected from light, the Cannular is the answer. This bench top unit is one of the most compact and easy to use can seamers you’ll find. The Cannular only requires one person to operate, and each can takes roughly 5 seconds to seam. With a two-person team, one filling and one seaming, the Cannular becomes a suitable option for nano breweries doing small canning production runs.

The Cannular’s table spacer is specifically designed to work with 500ml (16.9 oz) Can Fresh aluminum cans (19-CAN150 or Check the Options Above). 330ml (11.2 oz) Can Fresh cans are also available (19-CAN133 or Check the Options Above), but you will need the correct table spacer to use them with the seamer (19-CAN103 or Check the Options Above). We have tested standard 202 cans and have been able to achieve good seals with proper adjustments. It is necessary to adjust the table height to ensure you have the appropriate amount of pressure applied when the can lift is raised.

Operation:
The beauty of the Cannular lies in how truly simple it is to operate. With only three points of operation, it only takes a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the machine. The seaming process is as follows:

Place lid atop the can and place the can on the table spacer
Turn the platform lever clockwise to raise the can to the seamer
Press the button to turn the machine on and begin spinning the can
Push the seaming lever away from you and hold for 1-2 seconds
Pull the seaming lever towards you and hold for 1-2 seconds
Press the button to turn off the machine and stop spinning the can
Turn the platform lever counterclockwise to lower the can
That’s all there is to it!

Construction:
The Cannular was designed to be compact, durable, and safe to operate in a wet environment. The platform assembly is made from 304 grade stainless steel, so no matter how messy your canning gets, there’s no need to worry about rusting or degradation. The body of the unit is made from hammered sheet metal and fastened together with stainless steel screws. Rubber feet help keep the unit from slipping and sliding while in use. In addition, the Cannular features built-in brackets near the feet so you have the option to mount the machine to your counter or bench-top. The Cannular runs off of 24V DC power via the Anderson socket located on the back. This lower voltage was chosen specifically to make the unit as safe to use in a wet environment as possible.

Power:
As noted above, the Cannular comes with a 24V DC Anderson socket located on the back of the unit. It does not, however, include a cord and plug. When purchasing the unit, you have the option of pairing it with either a power supply with 110V plug (19-CAN101 or Check the Options Above), or with a 6 ft. long cord with Anderson plug and alligator clips (19-CAN102 or Check the Options Above). The power supply is straight forward, and allows you to plug the unit into a standard 110V power socket. The alligator clips give you the option to power the unit from a battery, and can even be used with an 18V cordless power drill battery. This is certainly the most affordable option for powering the Cannular, and we’ve found that upwards of 200 cans can be seamed on a single battery charge.

Why Cans?
So why can when you can bottle? There’s no doubt that canning has become a more and more popular format for packaging beer among craft breweries over the last several years, and with good reason. Aluminum cans aren’t just more environmentally friendly than bottles, since cans require less energy to transport and recycle, they’re also much better at protecting the quality of the beer. Whereas bottles allow in light, which leads to skunking, aluminum cans offer 100% protection from UV.

Specifications:
Power: 250W
Rated Speed: 3300 RPM
Gearbox Ratio: 9.8 : 1
Dimensions: 14″ L x 9″ W x 19.5″ H
Weight: 40 lbs

The table spacer included with the Cannular is specifically designed to use Can Fresh 500ml aluminum cans, which are 167.8mm tall and 52.4mm in diameter. To use the Cannular with 11oz cans, you will need a Cannular Table Spacer for 330ml/11.1 oz. Cans.

When you receive your Cannular, the rollers have been set and tested at the factory. They should not need adjustment for 100,000 cans. The table, however, comes unadjusted and getting it set up correctly is very important to getting a proper seal. Cannular’s test show that a .4mm (.015″) actual overlap is all that is needed to seal to 90 PSI. The proper table tension takes a little practice and expect to waste a few cans getting it dialed in. Once you learn the proper tension re-adjusting it is very quick and easy. You want the tension to be tight but not so tight as to dent the can. Use cans at your fill height with water for proper tension adjustment.

Tip: Using Undiluted PBW to Help with Bottle Label Removal

PBW Image Courtesy of MoreBeer.  Search PBW at MoreBeer

Part of Our Homebrew Tips and Tricks Series.  Check out the complete list – Homebrewing Tips, Tricks & Shortcuts!

  • Soaking your bottles in hot PBW is not a new technique.  It works well and I would venture a guess that a lot of homebrewers do this.
  • Here’s the tip… If you have a label or bits of adhesive that are being stubborn,   Put a little bit of PBW right on a label or adhesive that’s giving you problems and scrub.  The grittiness of the PBW combined with it’s full strength application generally dissolves the label and adhesive in short order.
  • PBW can be rough on your hands when diluted.  That’s even more true when it’s undiluted.  I recommend using protective gloves when dealing with PBW.

“The post on this unique carbonation cap has been machined ,so it fit BOTH the liquid and gas ball lock disconnects.”

Applications:

  • PET Bottles as Growlers: These are generally intended to convert 1L and 2L bottles to growlers.  Fill up a 1L or 2L PET bottle with your favorite homebrew.  Put one of these on (purge the headspace by squeezing if you want to) and then pressurize for transport.  This should help to reduce oxygen pickup and maintain carbonation levels.
  • Fine tune or rapidly carbonate beer: You can also use this cap to rapidly carbonate beer.  Same process as for transport, just set your regulator to the proper pressure and shake or agitate the PET bottle to help introduce CO2.  Or hook it up to CO2 and let it sit in you kegerator.
  • Draft Line Cleaning Projects:  I have developed two draft line cleaning projects using similar SS Caps – Build A Recirculating Draft Line Cleaning Pump | Mark II Keg and Carboy Cleaner Draft Line Cleaning Pump Conversion

One of the questions that arises on these type of carb caps, is… does it work with both liquid and gas posts?  Some models are universal fit and some work only with gas posts.  For draft line cleaning projects to work well, at least in my opinion, the carb cap that’s used needs to be universal.  I’m happy to report that the one I received did indeed work with both liquid and ball lock posts.  Check the product description for current specs.

Check out my Hands on Review of this great carb cap.

Back in Stock Again, Volatile Availability… Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler for Forward Sealing Faucets – Free Shipping, 5% Back & Hands on Review

Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler

Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler for Forward Sealing Faucets via Adventures in Homebrewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

  • The Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler is an all-new, easy-to-use bottling device!
  • Allows you to perfectly bottle beer from a forward-sealing beer faucet without CO2 loss.
  • Purge bottles and headspace with CO2 to keep oxygen out, prolonging the life of your beer.
  • Perfect for bottling for competitions, sending bottles home with friends, or to take on the go!
  • Easy to setup and super easy clean.

Exclusive to Great Fermentations, the Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler is the #1 way to fill bottles of your homebrew, directly from your kegging system. No more messing with alternate liquid lines or hard to assemble contraptions. Just fit the Tapcooler into any forward sealing faucet (i.e. Perlick, Intertap/Ultratap/Vent-Matic, etc..), hook up a CO2 line, and you’re good to go. Fill bottles for a competition, or just fill a couple take home bottles for your friends. The Tapcooler is quick and easy to use, and will help maintain the flavor, aroma, and carbonation level of your beer so it tastes the same out of the bottle as it would out of the tap.

FEATURES
For starters, a counter pressure bottle filler is better than most bottling solutions, as the bottle is under pressure while the carbonated beer flows in. Because the interior of the bottle is pressurized there is minimal loss of the CO2 in solution.

The Tapcooler solution improves upon the standard counter pressure filler, as it plugs DIRECTLY into your draft system faucet (tap). Most solutions require you to hook up a separate liquid line, which is not something standard draft systems have setup and requires additional prep (i.e. more time). With the Tapcooler, you can have it setup and ready to go in less than a minute! The Tapcooler design is also advantageous because after you are done filling the bottle, it stays in place hooked up to your faucet vs. other fillers require you to set aside and pick back up again for the next bottle.

Connecting your CO2 line is also a snap. You can either hook up directly with a 3/16 in. push-fit line, or connect your line to the included barb fitting. Optionally, you can purchase the gas ball lock adapter (item #GF884) which gives you the ability to attach a gas (grey) disconnect directly to the filler unit. This optional accessory is a MUST HAVE in our book!

With the Tapcooler design, your beer AND CO2 are filled from the bottom of the bottle through the telescoping bottle connection tube. First CO2 flows down into the bottom of the bottle to flush from the bottom up. Next you open the tap and beer flows down the same tube, filling from the bottom up. The result is a more effective purging of oxygen and little to no foam during the filling process

The telescoping bottle connection tube allows you to fill bottles as small as 4.5 in. tall up to 12.5 in. You can fill taller bottles with the Tapcooler, but the tube will not reach the bottom of the bottle which can lead to some splashing. When filling large mouth containers, a bottle stopper of suitable size and with a 9 mm hole may be used.

The filler features a push button CO2 purge valve which allows you to purge the bottle of oxygen before & after filling. It also includes an adjustable pressure relief valve, giving you the ability to change the filling speed. The pressure relief valve also acts as an overflow port for excess beer/foam to escape when filling.

One of our most favorite features of the Tapcooler, is that is super easy to clean. Cleaning other bottle fillers can be a chore and take lots of time. The Tapcooler comes apart easily and allows you to clean all parts effectively and easily after each use.

All metal parts that come into contact with your beer, are made of stainless steel (SS304). The barb and ball lock CO2 adaptors are made of aluminium.

Lastly, the Tapcooler comes chalk full of optional accessories which will adapt your filler perfectly to your setup. See the related parts section below for list of them!

FORWARD SEALING FAUCET COMPATIBLE
Tapcooler fits Ultratap, Vent-Matic, Perlick 600 series and Intertap faucets. These fillers can be converted to fit Perlick 500 series with optional tap connector (Item #GF891). Cannot be used with ventilated beer taps, i.e. not forward sealing beer taps.

SUMMARY OF AWESOMENESS

  • Hooks up directly to any forward sealing faucet for quick and easy use.
  • Quick setup and easy maintenance.
  • Perfect for bottling for competitions, sending bottles home with friends, or just to have some bottles on the go!
  • A range of accessories are offered for more range and easier use!
  • Purge bottles with CO2 before and after filling for longer lasting beer!
  • Pressure relief valve allows for control over filling speed and allows excess foam to escape for the perfect pour every time!
  • Stainless Steel design
  • Easy to use and clean!

This connects directly to your compatible forward sealing faucet (Ultratap, Vent-Matic, Perlick 600 series and Intertap – Review) and allows you to easily counter fill bottles directly from the tap!

  • This has been wildly popular and has suffered availability issues since it was introduced.  Thankfully availability issues seem to be solved, at least for now.
  • I can recall no discounts on the Tapcooler.  I don’t know if it’s on MAP (Minimum Advertised Pricing) or not.  Great Fermentations (the first shop to introduce the Tapcooler) has ran a couple sales that applied to accessories, but nothing that worked on the Tapcooler, or the Tapcooler was out of stock at the time.
  • Adventures in Homebrewing has this for $79.99.  Considering free shipping, a general lack of discounts and the 5% back, I think this is the best current deal on the Tapcooler.
  • Shipping is Free!  Adventures in Homebrewing is offering free shipping on most orders of $55 or more with a few exclusions.
  • Bonus, 5% Back: Get the equivalent to about 5% back on nearly everything via AIH’s Rewards Program – note that you need to sign in to earn rewards
  • Considering of this, I think this is the Best Deal on a Tapcooler.  It’s sold out on multiple occasions, usually quickly after I post about it being available,  As of this posting, it’s back in stock.  Check the product page to see if it’s still available.
