Shorts Soft Parade Clone Recipe Kits on Sale – Extract & All Grain

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of trying Short’s Brewing Company’s beers on a couple of occasions. Once at NHC and once at GABF. I’m a huge fan. Shorts brews some off the wall and generally delicious beers. Bravo!

Adventures in Homebrewing is in the same neck of the woods-ish as Shorts Brewing. I’m not sure exactly where the points on the ubiquitous mitt illustration 🙂 would be, but they are both in Michigan.

AIH has developed a clone for Soft Parade, The rye based recipe features flavors from four varieties of berries. It includes fruit puree, malt extract, specialty grains and hops. The beer comes in at about 8% ABV.

Juno Choi’s Patagonia IPA + Finding Patagonia Malts

One of the homebrews that stood out to me while attending a past Homebrewer’s Conference, homebrewcon in Grand Rapids, Michigan was an IPA that was served by Brewer’s Supply Group (BSG) at their booth at the Conference. It was… delicious. Roasty, great hop character and easy to drink. I swung by for two samples and shortly returned… for a third and it was gone. After the conference, I got a hold of BSG to ask about the beer. I learned that it was formulated and brewed by Juno Choi. Juno kindly shared the recipe with me and I’d like to share it with you. Thank you Juno!

The recipe features 100% Patagonia Malts from Chile. Those were new to me and I think relatively new to the homebrew market here in the US, because… I had a very difficult time sourcing the grain for this recipe. After looking around a bit, I contacted Bryan at Great Fermentations. They already carried Patagonia, just not not all three varieties that this recipe calls for. Bryan kindly sourced the remaining grains and has stocked them at Great Fermentations. Thank you Bryan!

Other recipes are out there include Northern Brewer’s Plinian Legacy attempt at cloning this beer. I’ve tried that recipe and it makes a great beer, although I know of no other homebrew recipe that claims direct collaboration with Vinny like MoreBeer’s does. MoreBeer’s Pliny the Elder Kit is one of the best beers that has ever come out of my homebrewery. I can highly recommend it to you.

Big Little Guy IPA – Session IPA, Inspired by Founder’s All Day IPA

Big Little Guy Session IPA is available in both Extract and All Grain. It is a session IPA inspired by Founder’s All Day IPA.

Session IPAs are generally lower gravity beers that are hopped to the same level as a typical IPA. Great for warmer weather. The extract version is also set up for a quick and easy 20 minute boil.

Features – Pale Malt, Crystal 20L and 60L, Dark wheat malt, flaked oats along wit Amarillo, Simcoe and Crystal Hops.

About: “The original Double IPA! Vinnie Cilurzo began homebrewing in 1989 while in college. In 1994 Vinnie started the Blind Pig Brewing Company in Temecula, CA, a small, low-budget mico-brewery known for their extremely hoppy IPA – an IPA which won silver medals at both the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Vinnie sold his share in Blind Pig and was hired to manage and brew at the Russian River Brewing Company, a start-up brewery by Korbel Champagne in Guerneville, CA. In late 2002 Korbel decided to get out of the beer business and sold the Russian River name and brand to Vinnie who is moving the brewery to Santa Rosa, CA, 90 miles North of San Francisco, where he and his wife Natalie are opening a brew-pub which will serve homemade pizza and, of course, all of the Russian River Ales. Vinnie has won 10 awards at the Great American Beer Festival in the past six years and was named Small Brewing Company Brewmaster of the Year in 1999. Almost every beer that Vinnie makes commercially started out as a homebrew recipe at one point or another. Even as a professional brewer, Vinnie still homebrews at least 5 or 6 times a year.

This is the original homebrew recipe that was the basis for Blind Pig IPA which won Silver Medals at the World Cup of Beer and the Great American Beer Festival in 1996, the last year Vinnie brewed it. Two ‘dry hop’ additions along with 1 oz of American Oak are added directly to the fermenter after the first week of fermentation.
