Introducing Monster Mill MM-3G – Geared Three Roller Mill!

Geared 3 Roller Homebrew Mill Kit

Geared 3 Roller Homebrew Mill Kit from Monster Brewing Hardware

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The MM-3G Kit Consists of the MM-3G mill described below with the base, hopper, feeler gauge, and oil. All this under one part number with FREE UPS Ground SHIPPING! (excluding AK, and HI). This mill is NOT suitable for commercial applications including brew shops or commercial breweries. For commercial applications look at our Pro series mills.

Its finally here. We have added gears to the already successful MM-3 to create the new MM-3G. Basically a scaled down version of the already famous MM-3ProG. The drive shaft spins one top roller that drives the other top roller through a set of alloy steel gears. Grain from the top fixed gap is force fed to the adjustable gap between the main drive roller and the bottom third roller. Super reliable feeding is now a given for your hard core homebrew operation. The most advanced in our line of 3-Roller Home Brewing Monster Mills, The MM-3G is a further upgrade of our already successful MM-3. The MM-3G comes standard with two 1215 alloy steel gears driving two 1.5″ diameter 1144 alloy steel rollers, with a third idler roller providing a second crush through an adjustable gap, solid 303 stainless steel knobs, as well as the 1/2″ drive shaft with three flats for drill drive. The rollers are 6″ long just like all our home brewing mills. With all the great features of our already popular MM-3, but with gears for positive feeding. The MM-3G crushes all your grain twice, with one pass through the mill. It starts with a preliminary crush through the initial fixed gap of 0.070” between the top two rollers, and then ends with a pass through the adjustable second gap (0.028->0.055) between the drive shaft roller, and the bottom third roller. The initial pass slightly flattens the grain, and gets it ready for the next crush, that breaks apart the grains and loosens the starch with minimal husk damage.

The MM-3G consists of 6061 aluminum block frames with three 6″ long 1.5″ diameter 1144 alloy steel rollers riding on Oilite™ oil impregnated bronze bushings, while the third idler roller rides in bushings that are offset mounted in an adjustable knob. The stainless steel knob is held in a fixed position by thumbscrew that you can loosen to adjust the mill. This system provides an adjustment range of .070″. The knobs are turned from solid 303 stainless steel barstock for excellent durability. The skirt flange has a small cookie bite aligned with the eccentric offset that allows you to know how your offset adjustment is aligned. They have additional slots for a positive grip. For the rollers we use a superior grade of steel that is much harder (1144 alloy) than what is found on most comparable products. The drive shaft, and all the axles are integral to the roller rather than screwed into the ends. All the axles have minimal freeplay in the bushings for long lasting reliable life. This mill comes standard with the 1/2″ drive shaft. We recommend a name brand corded 1/2″ drill to turn this mill. Wimpy house special weak drills will release the smoke from the load. Suitable for the most discriminating serious hard core home brewer that wants the very best, the MM-3G is our flagship homebrewer model, the best of the best.

We highly recommend that you purchase our base and hopper. All current bases come standard with precision drilled alignment holes, dowel pins, and matching holes in all our Pro Frames, as well as the smaller MM-3 mill. To take advantage of this feature, you need to purchase our base and hopper along with your mill for precision frame alignment, and superior roller motion. You’ll also need a high quality corded drill to drive this beast. We recommend a 1/2″ drive name brand corded drill. Please note that the larger shaft will require the larger 1/2″ drive drill, as the more common 3/8″ chuck won’t accommodate the larger shaft. Our hand crank does NOT fit this mill as supplied, nor is it recommended for any of our Pro series mills.

This mill will NOT mill corn and doesn’t work well with rye by itself. It is designed for barley and wheat malt, and un-malted wheat. For corn see the 2Pro, or the 2ProPD.

Announcing: Kegland MaltZilla Motorized Malt Mill w/ Premium Diamond Rollers!

MaltZilla Motorized Malt Mill w/ Premium Diamond Rollers

MaltZilla Motorized Malt Mill w/ Premium Diamond Rollers via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Description
KegLand put an exceptional amount of time into the research, testing, and development of the MaltZilla, and what they came up with is a motorized grain mill unlike anything we’ve seen before. It features an integrated motor so you’ll never have to mess with a hand crank or power drill to spin the rollers. And the rollers themselves are made with a diamond-impregnated surface that offers superior performance and longevity compared to conventional knurled steel rollers.

The integrated 24V motor is powerful enough to chew through popping corn kernels with ease, and works on voltages from 12-30V DC. The higher the voltage the faster the rollers spin, although we recommend 24V for optimum speed and grist results. The unit does not come with a power supply. When purchasing the unit, you have the option of pairing it with either a power supply with 110V plug (CAN101), or with a 6 ft. long cord with Anderson plug and alligator clips (CAN102). The power supply is straight forward, and allows you to plug the unit into a standard 110V power socket. The alligator clips give you the option to power the unit from a battery.

Knurled Steel vs. Diamond Coated Rollers
Your run-of-the-mill grain mills are often manufactured with steel rollers with a knurled finish. The knurling helps grip and pull the grain through the rollers, but even the knurling on hardened steel will go blunt eventually and hinder the mill’s performance. Some manufacturers attempt to solve this problem by using geared rollers to better grab the grain, or add a third roller to the mill so the first two rollers with a larger gap force the grain into the third roller. These are only workarounds to the real issue—all steel rollers will go blunt eventually, especially if used with hard grains like wheat or corn. In a commercial setting, it’s not uncommon to send the rollers off to a metalworking factory to re-sharpen and re-knurl, but this is an expensive, time-consuming hassle. Many homebrew-scale users might just end up throwing the mill away and purchasing a new one.

The MaltZilla Diamond Mill is quite a different mill design, and it’s the first in the world to use diamonds impregnated into the surface of the roller. Even after many tons of grain are processed through the mill, the diamond surface will stay just as sharp as it was on day one. The sharpness of the diamonds draws grain exceptionally well, and even when hard grains are used the diamond rollers won’t dull or slip in performance.

Sheer Instead of Chop
Most mills require aggressive knurling to push into the grain and “chop” the grain as it passes through a tight gap, which means your grains are often chopped in half. The MaltZilla works on a different principle and gap setting is not as critical. The MaltZilla uses impregnated diamonds to grip the surface of the kernel and the friction of pulling the grain through the gap causes a sheering action. When set up correctly, the sheering action can leave the entire husk intact, reducing the chance of stuck sparge and improve efficiency, while still opening the husk enough that the entire contents of the kernel is available to the mashing process. The 70 mm diameter rollers are double the diameter of many other mills, which significantly improves the crush and assists in drawing the grain in more effectively.

Integrated Motor
You generally would not purchase a car without an engine, so why would you purchase a grain mill without a motor? Milling grain has an optimum RPM— too slow and it will take you a long time, too fast and you will end up with excessive powder. Hand cranking can be a pain in the backside, especially with larger grain bills, and using a power drill doesn’t offer much in the way of speed control and adds the potential risk of burning out your drill. The MaltZilla has an integrated motor with a very constant RPM putting out optimum RPM with an integrated gearbox. The high torque and sealed construction make it ideal for a brewing environment, as the motor is well protected from moisture and grain dust.

The motor is seamlessly integrated into the side body of the mill. Being DC, the motor is safer than higher voltage AC, especially in an environment where splashing and hose spray are commonplace. The DC motor is also reversible so the direction of spin can be changed based on the polarity. This is particularly useful for over-mount and under-mount installation.

Over-Mount and Under-Mount Installation
Traditionally, homebrew mills just sit on a board where they are moved from one bucket to another. The MaltZilla has multiple different mounting configurations. It can be over-mounted to a board like most mills are, but if you want a seamless finish to your garage/brewing area, you can mount the mill under your counter where it’s concealed and out of the way. Simply lift up a small opening in the top of your benchtop, drop in your hopper, pour in grain and run the mill. When you’re done, remove the hopper and conceal the opening.

There is also a MaltZilla PPE Base Board available (coming soon!) for over the bucket installation or designing your own mill stand.

Grain Hopper
This unit does not come with a grain hopper. We recommend using a large funnel with a shortened spout, or a repurposed gallon-sized water bottle.

Specifications:

  • Power: 12-30V DC
  • Anderson Connector Plug
  • Grain Inlet ID: 2-3/16″
  • Grain Inlet OD: 2-3/8″
  • Weight: 11 lbs

This looks pretty amazing and at a great price.  A couple things to note.  It does not come with a grain hopper and you need to purchase a power supply separately.  If you’re a Cannular owner – review – that power supply will work.

Hands on Review: The Barley Crusher

Having brewed all-grain for many years, I’ve spent lots of time refining my processes to try and produce predictable results. Things like brewing software make this much easier and do a great job of helping you calculate all your numbers. We can control how much grain we use and how much water, mash thickness, sparge volume, volumes going into fermenters, pitching rates, the list goes on. One thing I hadn’t been controlling, was my grain crush. When I had a local homebrew shop, the owner had no problem with me asking to double mill the grains to help get as fine a grain crush as possible while still not owning a mill. When he closed his shop, I was forced to start ordering my supplies online. Ordering from multiple different locations, having them mill my grain, it was obvious the variable that was changing was the crush size and I felt I was getting inconsistent results. Recently I purchased an all-in-one electric all grain system (Anvil), my brew days got much easier but my efficiency started to really suffer.

The MM-3ProG consists of 6061 aluminum block frames with three 6″ long 2″ diameter steel rollers riding on Oilite™ oil impregnated bronze bushings, while the third idler roller rides in bushings that are offset mounted in an adjustable knob. The billet knob is held in a fixed position by a black oxide bolt you can loosen to adjust the mill. This system provides an adjustment range of .027″. The knobs are milled from solid 6061 aluminum barstock for excellent durability, and now ride in Igus™ bushings to prevent galling between the knob and frames. The flange has two semi-circular slots that allow you to attach the knob positively to the face of the aluminum frame. They have 12 sides for a positive grip. For the rollers we use a superior grade of steel that is much harder (1144 alloy) than what is found on most comparable products and then we induction harden the rollers so that they will last 10X as long. Commercial brewers have crushed 200,000 lbs + . The drive shaft, and all the axles are integral to the roller rather than screwed into the ends. All the axles are 3/8″, with minimal freeplay in the bushings. This mill is massive and comes standard with the 1/2″ drive shaft. We offer an optional keyed 1/2″ drive shaft for gear motor/coupler applications. Instead of three flats for your drill chuck, there is a small slot for a 1/8″ key to completely eliminate slipping in gear motor/coupler applications. You will need some POWER to turn this mill. Suitable for a small micro, and great for the home brewer that wants the best, the MM3-ProG is our flagship model, the best of the best.

Announcing: Ss Brewtech Grain Mill!

Ss Brewtech Grain Mill MILL720

Ss Brewtech Grain Mill via MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

The Ss Grain Mill sports an all-in-one design, featuring a hi-torque DC motor combined with a leveraged gear reduction system that drives a series of billet aluminum pulleys and high inertia rollers that make easy work of the toughest wheat and rye malts — Capable of up to 350 lb/h

Differential Speed Rollers
Dating back to the early days of craft brewing, feed mills were often repurposed in breweries due to the lack of availability of milling equipment designed specifically for processing malt in brewing applications. Conversely, in a home brew settling, corona mills, and other repurposed mill designs intentioned for processing raw grain in a home kitchen were adopted for their ease and accessibility.

Naturally, if you’re feeding livestock or making grits, you typically want to pulverize the grain. However, if you’re brewing beer it’s preferable to crack the endosperm in several places and then sheer off the husk, keeping it mostly intact. This shearing and crushing action maximizes both efficiency and lautering performance, reducing or eliminating the need for rice hulls or other lautering aids. The two rollers inside the Ss Grain Mill are both driven by the onboard motor, but designed to rotate at different speeds. This key feature is at the heart of our purpose built mill designed for home and pro brewing.

Machined Fluted Stainless Steel Rollers
Other mills that are designed to pulverize grain, often rely on hardened steel knurled rollers to extend their usable life. The shearing action of the Ss Grain Mill places less stress on the roller to effectively process the grain. We settled on the more professional approach of fluting the rollers, which enhances the ability for the two rollers to engage the malt and effectively shear the husk from the endosperm. It was also important to us that this mill be functional in either a home or pro-environment, so we decided to cast the rollers in solid 304 stainless steel, with each roller weighing a robust 7.5 lbs.

Furthermore, the profile of the rollers has been completely rethought. Most small mills rely on a wide processing envelope and a small, 1.5-2” diameter roller. We have emulated the design of large production mills, and increased the diameter of the roller to 4”, and narrowed the processing envelope. This design increases the rotating mass, and stores rotational energy, which ultimately helps to smooth abrupt changes in rotational speed. Furthermore, the entrance angle is less aggressive with a larger roller, resulting in additional mechanical advantage.

Precision Gap Adjustment
Eleven points of adjustment ranging from 0.5mm to 2.0mm open up a wide range of malt products. Gap adjustments are tool-less and can be made without any disassembly, or complicated procedures.

Extruded Aluminum Chassis
The two piece extruded 6061 aluminum chassis promotes structural rigidity resulting in a more precise degree of roller alignment. This is important to retaining consistent roller gap settings from batch-to-batch. Furthermore, the two-piece construction isolates the motor and rollers in separate chambers, preventing the motor and drivetrain from accumulating dust and debris. All rotational pulleys, and rollers have their own dedicated fully sealed ball bearings for low drag and long life.

25 lb. Hopper Capacity
The Ss Mill will include a custom tooled 4mm thick ABS hopper that is both structurally strong and lightweight. Designed to hold up to 25 lbs. of grain at a time, the Ss Grain Mill has been clocked in prototype testing at processing roughly 350 lbs. per hour of barley malt. Which is roughly a 50 lb. sack every 8 mins, making it perfect for batch sizes from 5 gallons to 5 BBLs.

Features:
All-In-One Design
Differential Speed Rollers
Machined Fluted Stainless Steel Rollers
Precision Gap Adjustment
Extruded Aluminum Chassis
Specs:
350 lb/h
25 lb Hopper
0.5 – 2.0mm Gap Range

Hands on Review: Monster Mill MM-3 Grain Mill!

Updated: 5/14/2024

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

Monster Mill MM-3

I started milling my own grains not too long after I switched to all-grain. At first I thought the idea was laughable to mill my own grains- why buy something and do the work myself, when I could get it done for free at the homebrew shop? But once my process had stabilized a fair amount, I became frustrated by my inability to hit the recipe’s planned OG. On my batches where my gravity was lower than predicted, I found a notable number of fully intact grains in the spent grains from my mash. Aiming for consistency, I wanted to make sure all my grains were always crushed, so I bought a 2-roller grain mill. That worked well, but if I wanted to optimize mash efficiency, I was always dancing on the edge of a stuck mash.

The 3-roller mill from Monster Brewing Hardware passes through a first pair of rollers that have a fixed gap. That is machined to be 0.060”, with the intention of doing a minimal crush to soften the inside of the grain without really breaking the husk. After the first pair of rollers, it passes through the gap that you can adjust to your liking. The instructions provided with the mill recommend 0.045” for a medium crush, 0.055” for a coarse crush, and 0.038” for a fine crush. But of course the beauty of having your own mill is you can adjust it as you want, based on what works best for you.

The MM-3 3-roller mill comes with some options. The base rollers are 1144 steel alloy that is durable for long life, but can get some surface rust if used in a non-climate-controlled area, or if you wet mill your grain. For those homebrewers, they offer a stainless steel roller option, which they say has the same durability as the steel alloy base rollers. If you are a manic homebrewer, they offer a 3rd option with their MM-3 Pro series, which has heat treated rollers. These apparently have about 10x the life durability, but the price tag roughly doubles over the base MM-3.

The other option to choose from is the drive shaft size. Standard is a 1/2″ drive, but 3/8” is available as a smaller option. The 3/8” really isn’t recommended since 3/8” drive drills typically don’t have the torque to drive this mill. It can also be hard to find a cordless drill with enough torque to drive it, so Monster Mill recommends a corded drill. If you order the grain hopper from Monster Mill, it comes standard in galvanized 20-gauge steel, or optional stainless steel. Galvanized steel is corrosion resistant, so the only real advantage of stainless for your grain hopper is the “bling effect”.
