As kids, we build forts out of blankets, pillows, boxes, etc. And the really lucky kids have tree forts in their yards. In the homebrewing world, the tree forts are the dedicated brewing areas in basements, garages, or sheds. And like a good tree fort, you want to customize it to your taste. A good portion of the brew area customization revolves around the practical aspect of brewing beer- good closet or shelf space, custom hooks and gizmos to hang your lengths of tubing to dry, and a source of good brewing tunes. What’s standard in most of the different brewing spaces is poured concrete flooring. Industrial and efficient, but it lacks a certain pizzazz.

Enter Brew Floors. They sell kits for the DIY crowd- whether you’re a professional brewery or a home brewery. Heck, I suppose you probably don’t even have to use it in <gasp> a brewery! It’s an epoxy resin system, meaning it comes as a 2-part liquid that once combined makes a new compound that hardens into a durable, shiny, waterproof layer. They have various level kits from small to large square footage, as well as products that are thicker for use in more industrial areas, available in 4 different colors.

Light Up Your Home Brewery – 4,000 Lumen LED Workshop Lights

My home-brewery or most of my home-brewery is in my basement. It’s in a good sized utility room that was drastically underlit for home brewing purposes. Same story for our last house. Basement brew area, low light.

I’ve added several of these workshop lights to the area and it’s made a huge difference. Instead of what seemed like a cave, I’m now in a well lit space. These have commercial grade durability, have a stated 45,000 stated bulb lifetime (21 years at 6 hours/day), are lit by LED bulbs, are energy star rated and were very easy to install. One piece mounts on your ceiling (one on each end) and then a cable screws into that. That cable hooks to a smaller cable on the back of the lighting fixture. From there you adjust the cable to set the height of these fixtures. I like that they plug in using a standard 110 plug in and they are linkable. You can link multiple fixtures together to power additional units. They also have pull chains so you don’t have to wire to a switch.

For two of these, I switched out the ceramic socket fixture with a regular outlet but for most of them I just used a screw in socket to outlet converter.

These have made a big improvement, made it easier and more pleasant to work in my brewery.

For me, a quality utility sink is an important tool when homebrewing. I’ve done interviews in the past and been asked… what is on your home brewing wish list. I’ve felt a little silly answering…. a sink! But, I’ve tried to clean homebrew gear in a regular kitchen sink and I don’t like it. I much prefer a large, quality utility sink. Having done it both ways, it makes a big difference come cleanup time.

I landed on pictured Gridmann sink because it is NSF certified, features stainless construction and has a large bowl size. I really wanted a sturdy sink and wanted to get away from the plastic style utility sinks I had in the past. In my experience those get scratched up over time. Not a huge deal as I don’t… ferment in my sink, but still, I wanted to avoid another place for bacteria to hide.
