In my opinion this is not a direct one to one replacement for something like a Chugger Pump or a March Pump – the flow rate just isn’t there.  If you’re looking for a budget, full featured homebrew pump, consider the MARK II WORT PUMP – via William’s Brewing  or check out our pump resource page.  I do see some possible homebrewing applications including… Transferring wort, mash or sparge water within your system, recirculating mash to help keep a consistent temperature and recirculating wort for chilling.

Chugger X-Dry Series Pump - Stainless Steel H332X

Chugger X-Dry Series Pump  Stainless Steel from MoreBeer

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Introducing the X-Dry Series Chugger Pumps! These pumps offer the same great quality we’ve come to expect from Chugger, but now feature Run-Dry Protection. Although the Chugger still needs to be primed before each use, the X-Dry Series offers a new level of protection from damage due to cavitation.

The Chugger lineup of pumps represents a great value for an even better price. These pumps are workhorses in the brewery. Featuring a robust flow rate of 7 gpm, and a magnetic drive designed to handle back-pressure, these pumps are a great addition to any brewing setup! The Stainless Steel Chugger showcases their molded Stainless Steel Pump Head. This stainless pump is a steal for the price, and we’ve been more than happy with the quality! Use this to ease transfers between kettles, cool wort via a counterflow chiller, or recirculate icewater for quicker chilling!

The Chugger pump has 1/2″ mpt inlet and outlet, allowing easy configuration for any application! We recommend setting these pumps up with a Ball valve on the outflow side, this way you can throttle down the outgoing flow rate, allowing for more efficient sparges or cooling! The pump head can also be rotated 360° (in 90° intervals) allowing for even more customization!

Features:

  • Run Dry Carbon Bearing
  • Stainless Steel Pump Head
  • Food Grade up to 250° F
  • 1/2″ mpt inlet and outlet
  • High Flow rate of 7 gpm
  • Max Head 18.6 ft
  • 115v 55″ cord and plug attached
  • 50/60 Hz, 1.4 amp

Hands on Review: Mark II Homebrew Pump w/Stainless Head – limited time deal

Mark II Pump with Steel Head

Let’s face it, pumps aren’t the most exciting piece of homebrew equipment you own. With the exception of the RipTide pump, they don’t have “features” you can impress your friends with. There are a few basic requirements, and once you get those met, you’re just looking for the lowest price. For me, the basic requirements are: 1) Magnetic drive, 2) Ideally a stainless steel head, 3) Temperature & splash protection, and lastly 4) Maximum head.

The MkII’s Magnetic Impeller

Several vendors offer what’s called a “Mark II Pump”. So you need to dig deeper than just the name when comparing pump offerings from different shops. One requirement, which is pretty much standard across beer brewing pumps, is what’s called a magnetic drive. Magnetic drive means you don’t have to worry about grease from shaft bearings getting into your wort. The other advantage is that you can close a valve- partially or completely- on the output side of your pump to reduce flow, and it causes no stress to your pump. Magnetic drive is pretty much standard in beer brewing pumps, but I bring it up because shopping on Amazon or eBay you might get drawn into something that isn’t.

About Pump Features and Specs – What does Pump Head Mean?

Pump heads come in either stainless steel or some kind of plastic/resin. Some resins have a better temperature durability, so after many hours of operation they are less likely to break down and lose pressure/flow capability. Stainless steel doesn’t have this issue, but it also has more durable threads. Most wort pumps come with 1/2″ Male NPT at inlet and outlet so you can screw on hose attachments or ball valves. I’ve had bad luck with stripping threads off a polysulphone pump head even with the most careful attention paid to not cross-threading it.

The next key differentiator between pumps is temperature capability. Some are designed to handle cooler liquids and are maybe only rated to something like 80F or 180F. This simply isn’t good enough for brewing, you want something that can handle boiling wort temperatures (212F or hotter).

MK II High Temperature Magnetic Drive Pump

  • Stainless Steel Head
  • 110V/60HZ
  • 3.4 meter max head
  • 5 GPM (19L max flow)
  • Max temperature 248 F/ 120 C
  • Water resistant casing
  • 25 Watt Wort Pump
  • 1/2 inch fittings

The MK 11 Magnetic Drive Pump is constructed using food-grade materials and handles boiling wort with ease.  The magnetic drive functions like a clutch allowing one to slow the flow rate down by putting back pressure on the pump.  Since it is centrifugal, it’s not self priming, you must put the pump under the level of the liquid source.  This magnetic driven pump allows you to brew with confidence knowing that no contamination will occur from lubricated bearing potentially coming into contact with your liquid (beer).

Introducing: Pump and Chiller Stand from Keggle Brewing!

Pump and chiller stand

Pump and chiller stand via Keggle Brewing

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Being a home brewer myself, I was tired of trying find a place where I could set my Chugger pump and KB chiller and connect them together needing too many hoses that end up being in the way.  So, I designed a pump and chiller stand.  The stand is made of 1″ aluminum square tubing professionally tig welded together.  The base plate is 13” x 6” quarter inch aluminum plate with ½” rubber bumpers on the bottom side to create a very stable, safe structure.  The chiller is mounted to the stand using a 3” flat U-bolt with plastic covers to protect both you and the threads you with a one inch clearance to the base.  The U-bolt is included with the stand and different sizes are available depending on your chiller.  The stand is designed for a Chugger pump to be mounted five inches from the carry handle to leave plenty of room for your hand.  However, this stand can easily be modified to accommodate any other brand pump.  This will be one of the best equipment additions you will ever purchase.

All stands are MADE IN USA.

This is available in two versions.  Stand only and stand+chiller and pump.  The description makes it clear that this works with a number of pump models and brands.  It also work with a number of plate chillers, like shirron chillers.  Anything that is 3″ tall or less.
