I use two similar bus tubs [Note: Mine are a different model from a different manufacturer and different specs] on brew day and I find them invaluable. I keep one below my March Pump setup. It catches drips and also offers a place to store wet items such as stirring spoons, mash paddles, my mash stirring whisk and my equally invaluable 1 gallon pitchers. I reserve the other tub for clean and dry items. Having two of these helps me keep dry/clean and wet/dirty items separate and means less lugging stuff around on brew day.

Hands On Review: Rubbermaid Commercial Product 1 Gallon Bouncer Pitcher

Small Upgrade = Big Difference

There are several equipment purchases that I look back on and say… I’m really glad I got that, it’s made a big difference. Sturdy, Food Safe One Gallon pitchers fit that bill. I went from a mish-mash of too small plastic pitchers, found around the house, that bent under the weight of wort, dripped and leached who knows what into my beer to two commercial quality 1 gallon pitchers. What a difference.

I started out with pitchers similar to these those worked well, but have a couple of drawbacks, namely… aluminum does not play nicely with Star San. I still use those for some purposes. From there, I picked up a Rubbermaid Commercial’s 4 Quart Bouncer Pitcher

If I were to count all the “things” I have the most of in my homebrew collection, it would be a close race between tubing and fittings. Like the freeway system of the brewing world, we all have to get the wort/beer from one vessel to the next as we move through the brewing process. When dealing with hot liquids, that typically means silicone tubing. And when connecting tubing to your vessel or pump, there are 3 most common ways to do this: 1) Barbed fitting, 2) Quick Disconnect fitting, and 3) Camlock fitting.

Proflow Dynamics has been around since 2007. They specialize in camlock fittings, but also make a variety of other fittings and ball valves. They service a mix of different industries- including the brewing industry, of course. Barbed fittings are the simplest, but are typically designed to be a very tight fit (require a lot of effort to mate), or a looser fit (require a hose clamp). Either of these situations does not lend itself well to a joint you need to connect/disconnect frequently. Quick disconnects have a slick one-handed operation, which is their main appeal. The downside is their more complicated design makes them more expensive. And more complicated designs usually mean more ways to potentially fail.

I use an Ove Glove when I’m making yeast starters in an Erlenmeyer Flask. It’s really handy (pun intended) to swirl around the flask or to quickly remove to keep the flask from boiling over.

These are also handy on brew day for handling hot, (but not wet) ball valves and such.

I use similar bus tubs [Note: Mine are larger at 7 1/8 Gallons] on brew day and I find them invaluable. I keep one below my March Pump setup. It catches drips and also offers a place to store wet items such as stirring spoons, mash paddles, my mash stirring whisk and my equally invaluable 1 gallon pitchers. I reserve the other tub for clean and dry items. Having two of these helps me keep dry/clean and wet/dirty items separate and means less lugging stuff around on brew day.
