Maltmuncher Dual Roller Mill from William’s BrewingMore Info
From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:
This precisely machined mill from Keg King features two 5″ by 1¼” hard Cro-Molly steel rollers for durability and ease of crush. This twin roller mill with aluminum hopper holds 6 pounds of grain, and is precisely machined for smoothness of operation and durability. The hopper is 10½” tall, and features a rubber top rim to prevent injury.
The Cro-Molly rollers are gap-adjustable at both ends from .025 to .10″. We find for general use, setting the gap halfway between .025″ and .050″ works perfectly. The detachable handcrank can be removed to install an electric drill. The shaft is 10mm wide. Using a 3/8″ drill at 200 rpm gives you a crush rate of 5 pounds per minute. The mill can be mounted to a base you fabricate using two M6-1.00 pitch metric screws (not included, available at any hardware store). This is the best quality mill we have found in this price range.
Why Crush Matters?
- Crush is a pretty big deal when it comes to efficiency. Homebrew shops have a tendency to under mill grain. I think the reason for that is ease of use, with the thinking that a more coarse crush equals few stuck mashes and more happy customers. I guess it’s possible that a shop mill could over mill grain too. The point is, when you’re using someone else’s mill, it’s up to them how you mill your grain.
- Milling your own grain… 1. Gives you control over the crush of your grain. That’s a big factor in efficiency. 2. A mill allows you to fine tune for your equipment and process. You know what the crush is going to be since you set it. 3. A mill allows you to save money by buying whole bags of grain at a discount, and 3. The shelf life of unmilled grain is longer than pre-milled grain. Freshly milled grain = better tasting beer.
