There are several equipment purchases that I look back on and say… I’m really glad I got that, it’s made a big difference.  High quality, gallon size pitchers, are one of those purchases.  I went from a mish-mash of too small plastic pitchers, found around the house, that bent under the weight of wort, dripped and leached who knows what into my beer to two, large, purpose built pitchers!  What a difference.

I use these sorts of pitchers for vorlaufing/recirculating, topping up and transferring water, collecting wort from my mash tun, holding utensils on brew day and more.

Note that aluminum does not play well with Star San.  If you’re looking for something that’s more Star San friendly, consider – Rubbermaid Commercial Products 4-Quart Bouncer [Review]

I have 2 of these. Before I had a pump, this was how I did many tasks that the pump has replaced. However, I still use both on brew day. Both get sanitized and are used at different stages, including emptying the pump and lines, holding utensils, topping off with clean water, etc. Great for so many uses.
They can be eaten away with star san, but only if you leave it in there for a really, really long time. Highly recommended.

I learned the hard way no to leave star san in this container. It eats holes through it and causes it to leak. I would get the rubbermaid one too.

Cody, I’m not one to wear a tinfoil hat, but those rubbermaid pitchers are made of polycarbonate which can leech BPA at high temps. If you’re using this for hot wort IMHO buy the aluminum and be safe.

Is this true? I had not heard of this. I should have done more research before ordering it! Do you have any links to back this up so I can read into it?

Yes, at high temps polycarbonate can leach BPA. I did more reading up on it and there are many studies saying that it is released, however it is well below what is considered “safe for daily consumption.” Interpret that how you wish. One thing everyone should definitely be aware of though, is that alkali based cleaners (bleach, PBW, Oxiclean) accelerate the leaching of BPA out of containers.

I’d probably recommend the clear rubbermaid one. I like being able to see the measurements through the side instead of having to look down into it. Personal preference.
