About: Maris Otter is an Heirloom malt that is world renowned for its deep, rich flavor. It is considered Heirloom because it is an old varietal whose production of 1.5-2 tons per acre is very low. By comparison, modern varietals produce up to 4 tons per acre. Why do farmers still grow Maris Otter when more modern, high producing, disease resistant varietals are available? Because Craft Brewers around the World are willing to pay a premium for the complex, authentic pub flavor that Maris Otter provides. Maris Otter is an English malt extract, and is perfect for all English style beers.
Why did we choose Crisp Maris Otter?
The Crisp malting company is the ony privately held malt house in England and has a 140 year history of producing some of the finest malts in the World. Its authentic, heirloom malts are prized by craft brewers worldwide who put flavor first. As the price of Maris Otter has risen, Crisp is also one of the only Malt Producers that makes a 100% Maris Otter malt with no other malts blended in.
Flavors & Styles
Now for the first time home brewers making a batch from malt extract have access to the toasted bread, nutty, malt flavors that have made Crisp Maris Otter malt famous. We love it in Pale Ales, Browns, Reds, Porters, Stouts, Bitters, Scotch Ales, and even special IPA’s! But feel free to use it any beer where complex malt flavors are appropriate. This extract will produce a pale to light amber beer by itself, if you wish to make darker beers you can steep crystal malts, roasted malts, or specialty malts before adding this malt extract. We love feedback! Come back and leave a review letting us know how you used it and what you think of the flavor.
