Brewtech FTSs2 Heating and Cooling System

From multiple accounts, the temperature at the start of fermentation is key in controlling the flavor nuances of various yeast strains. Even if you have an elaborate system of heat pads, blankets, towels, water buckets, etc. that allows you to hone in on your desired temperature, it can’t react to changes in your fermentation. If things start to really heat up overnight while you’re sleeping, or during the day when you’re at work, you’re out of luck. Once you start caring about fermentation temperature, it doesn’t take long before you conclude you need something that has its own control to adjust and react to temperatures in real time.

Brewtech makes systems specifically designed for their stainless fermentors. “FTSs” is a cooling-only system, and “FTSs2” is cooling + heating temperature system. There is a digital controller that displays the current temperature (to a tenth of a degree), fitted with a hard-wired temperature probe. The probe slides down into a stainless thermowell that passes through the lid and reads the temperature down in the middle of your fermenting wort. The controller reacts to readings to turn on your cooling water or heat pad, as necessary to maintain your set temperature.

Ssbrewtech InfuSsion Mash Tun

At first glance, you might think the Brewtech InfuSsion mash tun was only created to lure those mashing in Igloo coolers into something more sophisticated. And that might be the appeal to some. For me, I was looking for a mash tun as I moved from e-BIAB to a 2-vessel electric system. I wanted a mash tun that’s only job was mashing. The InfuSsion provided that simplicity of function, while still being technologically advanced.

Two Vessel Setup

The InfuSsion mash tun is a combination stainless steel kettle and insulated cooler. The inside of the mash tun is durable stainless steel, as is the outside. In between is sandwiched high density insulating foam to make a full inch of engineered layers. With the foam inside the walls you can’t directly heat the mash tun as you’d risk melting the foam. Of course with the foam in there, it means you’re less likely to need to add heat.

The Brew Bucket was the first product and the origin of Ss Brewtech, and for many brewers, the Brew Bucket was their first chance to ferment in stainless steel. Nearly a decade later, Ss challenged their engineering team to pair some of the newest technologies with the original design.

Brew Bucket Pure Flow Valve
The star of the Brew Bucket 2.0 is the new Brew Bucket Pure Flow Valve. This valve uses Pure Flow technology, originally developed for the Ss line of professional brewhouses. The removable silicone membrane of the valve provides a sanitary environment where beer makes contact with nothing except silicone. Additionally, they have molded the racking arm geometry into the valve’s silicone diaphragm to provide a seamless flow path for beer when transferring from the Brew Bucket 2.0.

Sanitary Connection
The valve attaches to the Brew Bucket using a welded external garden hose thread fitting that allows for a compact, easy-to-use connection without the need to fumble with additional clamps and gaskets. The threads are located externally and sealed by the gaskets built into the Pure Flow silicone, keeping them clean and sanitary. With the new valve design, the brewer can fully rotate the racking arm 360 degrees for maximum control while racking a finished beer.

Conical Base
The Brew Bucket 2.0 continues what made the original a great solution for home brewers. The pro-inspired conical base helps minimize trub interaction with fermented beer, thus limiting any concerns of off flavors produced during maturation. Combined with the rotatable racking arm, brewers can effortlessly rack off clean beer like the pros do in craft breweries.

Full Width Lid
The Brew Bucket 2.0 features the same full-width removable lid as the original, with a wide access opening that makes cleaning and sanitizing a breeze. Finally, the included thermowell has been repositioned to the lid, and the increased length allows for accurate readings, even when brewing partial batches.

Right from the start I knew there was something special with the Ss Brewtech fermenter as I opened the box it came in. Having received some gear that came out of torn and collapsing boxes recently, it stood out to me how the box was completely together. While you might chalk that up to how careful the delivery guy was, I could tell this box was designed with purpose. The thickness of the layers, and the construction of the layers were clearly designed to handle both scrapes and crushing loads. All this might seem trivial, until you unbox that new shiny piece of equipment you’ve spent your hard-earned dollars on and find it scratched, scuffed, or slightly out of round. With the thought and purpose Ss Brewtech put into their packaging, you can tell that they wouldn’t accept those careless things to happen to their equipment. And that counts.

  • Supply Issues… Like a lot of vendors, Ss Brewtech is having some problems keeping things in stock. This is true of the 7 gallon Brew Bucket. If this is like other supply problems we’ve seen lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next shipment gets sold out before it arrives or soon after. Whether you are interested in splitting a 5 gallon batch for experimenting, or just brew 2.5 gallons, the BrewBucket Mini is a great choice.

Featuring a conical bottom, 304 SS construction, a rotating racking arm valve, and stackable design, these are space saving feature rich fermenters that are easy and enjoyable to use.

We inspected and used the Brew Bucket™ and one of the most unique features that stood out is that the Brew Bucket can be stacked during fermentation, even with an airlock attached. We also like the conical bottom that allows trub to settle out in a concentrated space that minimizes the surface area of the trub that is in contact with your beer. The included Patent Pending Rotating Racking Valve is also a brilliantly simple design allowing you to rotate the racking arm inside the Brew Bucket down during fermentation to minimize trub, and later up to get clear beer when racking! Etched Volume Markers on the inside were super handy when filling.

The build quality is really amazing for the price. Welds are clean. The lid is strong and the spring loaded lid hatches are solid. The lid includes a removable, molded silicone gasket that ensures an airtight seal. We love an airtight seal so that we can be sure to see the airlock working. The welded on stainless handles make the BrewBucket super easy to move.
