Flying Dog Airwaves India Pale Lager Recipe – Straight From The Brewery!

The fine brewers at Flying Dog have released their recipe for India Pale Lager.

From Flying Dog:

Matt Brophy was first introduced to brewing while listening to the smooth sounds of CHARLIE PAPAZIAN, renowned godfather of homebrewing and nuclear physicist, discussing the trials and tribulations of brewing on NPR. A then 17-year-old Matt was so inspired, he ran out to buy Charlie’s penultimate The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. The rest, as they say, is history.

continues below…

Now some years later, a perfect storm of brewing conditions would cause Matt and Charlie’s paths to cross again. The American Homebrewers Association, whose membership refers to Charlie as Mr. President, held their annual conference in Baltimore earlier this summer, just east of our fair brewery. Matt and Charlie connected and put together the aptly-named Airwaves, an India Pale Lager that showcases Matt and Charlie’s collective love of hops.

To no one’s surprise the commemorative beer was a hit, and while we only brewed enough for the conference we knew we would have homebrewers looking for more. We tucked a little bit away and got the go ahead to share the recipe with you so that is exactly what we plan to do.

On WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 stop by the brewery and enjoy a sample of Airwaves and PICK UP THE RECIPE TO BREW AT HOME OR SHARE WITH FRIENDS. It’s like the old saying goes, give a man a beer and his immediate thirst will be satisfied, teach a man to brew and he will lead a life of passion and purpose.

Important Note: There is a typo in the recipe. It refers to Wyeast 2778 which does not exist. It should be Wyeast 2278 Czech Pils.

Grab the rest of the ingredients – 10 lbs Maris Otter, Centennial, Galaxy and Mosaic Hops

Announcing: Nut Nibbler American Porter – Features Cacao Nibs & Macadamia Nuts

From Great Fermentations:

Nuts and chocolate, together in a beer at last! Nut Nibbler is a smooth and delicious American Porter that utilizes British yeast for a special base beer. Brewer Michael Beck, who took the Brewer’s Vote with this recipe at the 2022 Indy Brew Battle, gently toasts cacao nibs and unsalted macadamia nuts, which he then adds in with the grains to infuse a dose of roasty chocolate and nut character into the beer. Perfect for the winter months, this beer features an array of malts that bring out the toasty, chocolatey flavors of the beer. Some Willamette and East Kent Goldings round the beer out and give it just enough bold hop character to balance out the flavor profile, including one hop addition added in with the grains. If you like well-balanced dark beers with a bit of special character, you’ll love Nut Nibbler!

Available in extract and all grain recipes. Note that you’ll need to add 3 oz macadamia nuts.

A notable percentage of people have some motivation to reduce or completely eliminate gluten intake.  Reasons vary from dietary choice to gluten sensitivity to serious medical conditions including auto-immune diseases like Celiac Disease.  This may describe you or a friend or family member.

A valued HBF reader has launched  a homebrew club specifically for people with gluten intolerance.  It will be a local club that meets in Portland Oregon at Ground Breaker Brewing, but will also have an online community component.  The first meeting is coming up in January, click on the flyer above for complete info.

Viceland Looking for Homebrewers to appear on Season 2 of Beerland

I received the following from Erin Glass Casting Producer for Viceland’s Beerland.

“I’m currently working on the second season of Beerland, a series that dives into different craft beer communities around the US to feature fascinating homebrewers and the brews they make! We will showcase different homebrewers from all walks of life who are passionate about not only the beer they make but the community they share it with. We’d see the interesting places they enjoy their beer and what goes into making their brew one of a kind! We’re very interested in finding diverse and unique people and fun, visual places and events where they share their beer! We’re looking to do our next episodes in MN, AL, OR, MT, MS, LA, IL, MI, and AK this July/August.”

If you know any homebrewers who might be interested in sharing their story and passion with us, please pass along my info and have them email the following info:

  • Name, Age and Photo City, State
  • Years brewing
  • Who you brew with/Why do you brew/Where you brew
  • Have you made any “specialty” brews

And… We’re Back!

Yesterday morning I awoke to several messages letting me know that this site was unavailable.  After some digging I found out that:  An automated process that is run by our web host, Google, disabled the entire site and effectively marked it for deletion.

Of course, I took exception to that and started working to reverse that process.  While this protest process was working, I also set up an alternate site. I published a post there letting people know what was going on.

In response to that I received an email from Robert, an HBF reader, letting me know that he works at Google and was trying to work on our issue from the inside.  He made some contacts on our behalf and helped to get things corrected.  Many thanks to Robert!!

This morning I received another email letting me know our site has been restored!

The help and encouragement that I received during this outage goes to show you why this site works.  The reason for that is… the homebrewing community is amazing!  Homebrewing is a awesome hobby filled with awesome people!

EDIT: I received an email from someone that works at Google with the group that hosts this site.  It was a very nice apology along with the news that they are launching an internal investigation to try and figure out the cause of this with hopes of avoiding it in the future
