Hands on Review: Blichmann Engineering Riptide Brewing Pump Upgrade Kit – Upgrade Your March or Chugger Pump

This review is by Homebrew Finds Reader Benji S.  Benji has been brewing for 10 years.  His favorite style is Festbier.  He’s an all grain brewer and member of WIZA (Whidbey Island Zymurgy Association).  Check him out on Instagram at neon_hop

Tell anyone that you spend hours cleaning as part of a hobby, and you’ll probably get a few odd looks. Unfortunately this is our reality as Homebrewers. Planning, prepping, cleaning, and waiting take up large percentages of any given batch. We often chase new ingredients, techniques, equipment, and short cuts in an effort to reduce the time we spend on these areas. Sometimes introducing new equipment into your process can make some parts of these tasks easier, while introducing new steps to others.

Pumps help move around lots of liquid in a short amount of time, reducing the need to lift heavy kettles or pots. They also introduce some additional planning needed for connecting vessels in a loop of hosing and cleaning after use. This has essentially been the summary experience I’ve had with my Chugger X-Dry [Hands on Review]. In the never ending quest for reducing the time and effort needed to use it, I looked at what changes I could make to my setup to make using it even simpler.

Blichmann Engineering is well known for high quality and well designed equipment targeted at Homebrewers. It should be no surprise then that their Riptide pump is a fairly feature packed model compared to others on the market. Particularly their TC clamp attached pump head with built in flow control and priming valve. In recognition of their audience, Blichmann also produces an upgrade kit that offers these same features to anyone with a Chugger or March pump.

Upgrading my Chugger X-Dry with their kit seems like a perfect way to take a good pump and make it even better, hopefully shaving some steps off of the prep and cleaning process in the meantime.

Criteria

My original criteria when looking for a pump were largely satisfied by the Chugger X-Dry, but there were a couple of criteria that were lacking, namely:

  • Head assembly should be fairly easy to take apart to aid in cleaning]
  • Flow control valve for use when sparging
  • Easy and intuitive to prime and get started

As the Riptide conversion kit is meant to solve many of these things, it made a natural candidate for trying out an upgrade to see if I could improve the usability experience. Additionally, my experience with the X-Dry suggested it was fairly easy to get into a state where it was cavitating. My hope was that the purge valve would help alleviate, or solve, this issue.

Hands on Review: Anvil Crucible Stainless Conical Fermentor!

Anvil Crucible Stainless Conical Fermentor

Complete Fermentor Box Contents

In the world of brewing, stainless steel reigns supreme. And in the world of fermentors, conicals top the “most desired” list of many homebrewers. So of course, combining these two things explains why stainless conicals are such a desired commodity in the homebrewing world. Blichmann was one of the first to offer homebrewers a stainless conical fermentor, back in 2004. But recently they introduced a more budget-friendly model, in their Anvil line, called the Crucible. The Crucible does not have the same feature set as Blichmann’s Fermenator, as the Anvil Crucible is not pressure capable. But it does take advantage of the true “conical fermentor” shape.

Fermenter vs Fermentor?

(Note: Some use the word “fermenter”, and some use “fermentor”. Although “fermenter” is the common use word, someone once explained that grammatically speaking, “fermentor” was more accurate. So now I can’t help myself. Sorry.)

Hands on Review: Anvil Crucible Cooling System

This review is by Homebrew Finds Contributor Brad Probert.  Brad is an engineer, expert homebrewer and experienced reviewer.  Grab a link to Brad’s website at the end of this review.

Anvil Crucible Cooling System

The Anvil Crucible is a new stainless steel fermentor on the market. It has the 60-degree angled cone which makes it long and narrow as it tapers down. This angle makes it steep enough that as yeast and particulate drop out of suspension in your fermenting beer, it hits the cone wall and slides down to the bottom point. This long cone makes the fermentor taller overall. The 7 gallon Anvil Crucible measures 30.5” from the bottom to the top of the lid (plus an additional 6.25” for airlock and stopper). In contrast, the Anvil Stainless Bucket Fermentor is only 19.5” tall (plus the 6.25” for airlock). Both of them have the same 16.5” width from handle to handle. So while you can stuff the Bucket Fermentor in a dorm-sized fermentation fridge, not so for the Crucible. However, Anvil has an optional Cooling System for the Crucible you can buy to add on cooling capability.

Cooling System Full Kit

The Crucible cooling system replaces the standard one-hole stopper (just for the airlock) with a multi-hole stopper that has holes for inlet and outlet spots for the stainless cooling tubing, another hole for the stainless thermowell, and lastly a hole for an airlock. The cooling tubing is fairly narrow, but it makes up for its small diameter with lots of extra length as it runs up and down inside, providing extra surface area for cooling. To attach to the metal cooling tubes, the kit includes two 5-foot lengths of vinyl tubing, which provide a clamp-free tight fit to the inlet and outlet tubing portions.

Rare Promo That Works With… Blichmann Engineering Beer Gun + Hands on Review

blichmann engineering beer gun dealBlichmann Engineering Beergun

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

What is a BeerGun? It is an easy way to fill beer bottles with sediment-free carbonated beer from a kegging system without excessive foaming.

Beer foam is caused by a sudden change in pressure. Unlike awkward counter pressure fillers, the BeerGun does not pressurize the bottle to avoid a sudden change in pressure when filling, but instead relies on a very gradual reduction in pressure from keg pressure to the open air. By avoiding design features like ball valves and sharp bends in the flow path, the BeerGun gently reduces pressure on the carbonated beer as it flows through it, with the result being the cold carbonated beer that flows out has minimal foam, while still containing carbonation. A purge button behind the trigger lets you first flush the bottle with C02 before filling if desired to eliminate oxygen in the capped bottle.

What matters is the BeerGun is easy to use, and makes filling sediment-free beer bottles from a keg an easy job instead of a chore. For successful use, beer must be below 37° F. and beer bottles must also be cold.

To use the BeerGun, you will need a kegging system filled with carbonated cold beer and C02 regulator. Hook the included 10’ of beer hose up to your ball or pin-lock barbed beer keg fitting. Now provide 5’ or so of gas hose, and a Q12 hose barb (both not included) and screw it into the base of the BeerGun and attach the gas hose. Hook the other end of the gas hose to a spare hose barb on your regulator. Now pull the trigger to easily pour carbonated beer into bottles. Cap quickly to avoid carbonation loss, and you are done. The BeerGun includes beer hose, a brush for the barrel, gas hose and connector, ball lock beer connector for your keg, and detailed instructions.
