Hands on Review: Torpedo 10 Gallon Ball Lock Homebrew Kegs!

Larger 10 and 15 gallon homebrew kegs have been very hard to find… for years.  There have been a couple sources, eBay was a best bet, but that was touch and go at best.  When you could find one, prices were… outrageous.  $300++ for a used 10 gallon keg would not be uncommon.  Again, that’s IF you could find one.

Great news homebrewers…. MoreBeer has introduced 10 and 15 gallon homebrew ball lock kegs via their Torpedo line of kegs and accessories.  These are BRAND NEW kegs that are (hopefully) readily available at a reasonable price.

Why a larger 10 or 15 gallon homebrew keg?

The first and most obvious answer is for large batch brewers.  If you brew 10 or 15 gallon batches, it sure would be nice to have a keg that fits your entire batch.  Even if you don’t brew 10 gallons, you may want to brew a couple 5 gallon batches of the same beer (much like professional brewers do) and keg it in a single keg.

A less obvious answer to the question is… to use as a fermenter.  Kegs are well-built stainless steel vessels that are pressure capable.  You can easily move them around and they are built to be bumped around a bit.  Using a keg opens up some really interesting possibilities…. fermenting under pressure with a Spunding Valve [See: Build a Spunding Valve! – How and Why], naturally carbonating in the fermenter/Krausening (again with the aid of a Spunding Valve), transferring under pressure, oxygen-free (or near oxygen-free) transfers, re-purposing expelled CO2 and more.

A third application is similar to the second… Use as a UniVessel.  Ferment and serve in the same vessel.  Save time and simplify your process.

5 Gallon Cornelius Keg, Ball Lock (Used)

Used 5 Gallon Cornelius Style Ball Lock Kegs via Adventures in Homebrewing

More Info

From the product description, check product page for current description, price and availability:

Pressure tested 5 gallon, stainless steel, cornelius style tank. These tanks are guaranteed to hold pressure. 25″ tall and 8.5″ diameter. Tanks will show normal wear and tear. May have stickers on kegs. May also have syrup residue in tanks as we only dump them.

Kegs include the o-rings and poppits that were installed when we received the tanks. We will often change an o-ring or poppit to get the tank to hold pressure. If you would like to have new o-rings or poppits, the options below allow you to add these. We do not change them but simply add them to the order.

If you are just getting into kegging you will need a kegging setup to go with these kegs. We sell picnic tap systems, tower systems, and kegerator systems.

We know some homebrewers are more picky than others, so please keep in mind that these are USED kegs. Some of these kegs are probably 30 years old. Do not expect new kegs. If you are looking for new kegs, please check out our new kegs. We try and have quality kegs available at all times. With this said, they are going to show normal wear and tear. We try not to purchase from Pepsi or Coke to avoid heavily used kegs. We are not implying that our kegs are not quality…we just want to avoid any misunderstandings. Most of the kegs have black protective tops and bottoms, some are blue. We may have a few green, red or yellow tops. If you want a particular color, please indicate that at checkout time and we will try to accommodate you.

***SPECIAL BUY*** These pin lock kegs are the exact same as our other pin lock kegs except that they are 1 inch taller. Dimensions are: 23″ tall x 9″ wide THESE ARE LIMIT 2 PER ORDER DUE TO LIMITED QUANTITY***

This is a re-conditioned 5 Gallon Pin Lock, Soda Keg (Coke style). This keg has been cleaned and soaked in a hot “Brew Clean” solution, re-rinsed, lubed and re-pressurized to check the seals. The kegs are in good shape, but could have small dings, dents or scratches. These will not effect the function of the kegs. Many have stickers on the outside. They might be of either Cornelius, Firestone (also called Spartenburg) or Italian construction. All types of kegs are manufactured to the same specifications and are of the same quality. This keg’s lid will not have a pull tab pressure relief valve but, rather, The lids and O-rings are interchangeable. We fully guarantee your satisfaction with the kegs you purchase. ***FREE O-RING PROMOTION: 1 LID, 2 POST AND 2 DIPTUBE O-RINGS FREE WITH YOUR ORDER!***

If you buy the max of 2 (per order), shipping will be about $5 per keg to most US addresses. That figures to $54.49 per keg shipped.  As of this posting, these beats my estimated per keg cost for on the only other pin lock deal I’m aware of.

The only caveat with this deal is that these are 1″ taller than standard ball locks. If you have an inch of extra clearance in your pin lock setup, this is the best deal going on right now.

Note that the max of 2 is per order. I believe that you can place multiple orders.

Pin Lock Keg Pricing & Availability…

There’s been a real reversal in used keg pricing. For example, see MoreBeer’s Pin Lock Offering.  I’m guessing this is related to availability. New pin lock kegs are not coming into the homebrewing market and I believe we’re finally hitting an availability wall that’s driving up price. I’m guessing sales like this will become fewer and far between as supply continues to dwindle. If you like pin locks, I think now is the time to buy
