If you’re ready to step up to all grain brewing, this converted insulated cooler works wonders as a mash tun! The 14-gallon size can hold upwards of 25 lbs of grain, so there’s plenty of room for even the strongest 5-gallon beer recipes and is perfect for most 10 gallon batches up to 1.070 SG. Comes pre-assembled with stainless steel perforated false bottom, high temperature silicone tubing, and 1/2″ female threaded ball valve. Pair the valve with the male threaded fitting (plus a little plumber’s tape) that best suits your setup and you’ll off and running.

The cooler also works perfectly as a Hot Liquor Tank. Use with the false bottom in place, or simply remove it and keep it on hand in case you decide to use the cooler as a Mash Tun down the road. Two of these coolers plus the Fermentap Sparge Arm Assembly work perfectly as a gravity fed all-grain setup. To connect the cooler’s ball valve to the sparge arm assembly, we recommend a 1/2″ MPT x 3/8″ Barb fitting and 3/8″ ID silicone tubing. Plumber’s tape will ensure you have a leak-proof connection between the barb fitting and the ball valve.

CIP (Clean in Place) Spray Balls are generally used for vessels that are too large to move.  Since they’re too large to move you… clean them in place.  If you have a larger setup, you could incorporate these into your system or routine to help clean your vessels more easily.

There are a couple of main styles of CIP spray balls stationary and rotary.  Note that if you’re going to try and use this for sparging, you may want to use the fixed spray version as Sam did.  You’re probably not going to get enough pressure with gravity alone to turn the rotary version.

  • What I like about this scale… I like that it has a large 50 lb capacity.  That makes it a great candidate for use as a grain scale.  I also like that is uses both easy to find AAA batteries and the included AC adapter.  This scale also includes, the requisite (in my opinion) tare feature.
  • What’s the tare function?  Tare allows you to subtract the weight of the container you’re using to get a true weight of the contents.  Add your empty container to the scale and press the tare button.  This zeros out the scale.  Now add the thing you’re weighing and the scale displays just the weight of the contents of your container.  In my opinion the tare function is essential for any good homebrewing scale.

How Long Does Star San Last?

Star San is my sanitizer of choice.  It’s food safe and no rinse.  Required contact time is five mintues.  It has worked very well for me for quite some time and I’m convinced that it’s one of the most economical solutions available if you use the spray bottle method. How Long Does Star San Last?

With regards to mixed Star San Solution: The official answer is probably… you should mix a fresh batch each time you use it.  To really test the effectiveness, you need to titrate the solution and test the PPM.

Practically speaking, many homebrewers use and re-use Star San.  If you’re going to do that, the solution should be relatively clear and the mixture should have a pH of under 3.5.  Previously the recommendation I received from Five Star Chemicals was that the solution should by crystal clear, however, for bottles of Star San not older than 1 year (check the manufacture date on the bottle) crystal clarity isn’t necessarily a requirement.

Accurate, Narrow Range Strips: These are more accurate and easier to read than most pH test strips.  Use these to check the pH of your mash and of your finished beer.  These offer the same advantages of a pH meter without the cost and maintenance that goes along with a meter.

Why these instead of a pH meter?  pH meters have their place. The downside is they require maintenance and continued cost. You have to calibrate, clean and properly store pH probes for accurate readings.  I believe this is why pH meter reviews tend to skew negative.

Tip… Cut these in half the long way.  You’ve saved 50% and they are still easy to read.
