Hands On Review: Stanley Vacuum Insulated Stein

Stanley Vacuum Insulated Stein.  18/8 Stainless steel.  Won’t rust.  Naturally BPA free.  Dishwasher Safe.  Latching lid helps keep beer cold and carbonated.

Available in Hammertone Green and Matte Black

Vacuum insulation helps keep your beer and other beverages cold (or warm) and should also reduce or eliminate condensation on warm days.  Since this is not made of glass it would be handy for the pool, beach and park.

First, I want to say that I’m a big fan of Stanley PMI branded coolers, growlers and such. I have a lot of their gear including multiple vacuum insulated growlers [Hands on Review].  I’ve been impressed by the quality, features and styling of the Stanley products that I own.  Considering all that I snapped up one of these steins shortly after I learned about them.  Here’s a hands on look.

This side of the label talks about the stein’s insulation, it’s ability to keep liquids cold for up to 9 hours and says it will “Keep Beer Carbonated”

More estimates on performance – up to 9 hours cold, 36 hours iced and 5 hours hot.  Made of Stainless Steel and features double wall insulation.

Diagram and explanation of features.  Latching lid, steel inner lid (no plastic contact for beer) , dishwasher safe and more.

Bottom of the stein.  It does have a boilerplate government warning.  Check with your local brewery to see if this suffices for areas have specific requirements.  In the back Spyderco Byrd Robin 2 box used to prop the growler up.

A look inside.  It looks beautiful, similar to my Stanley growlers.

Inside look at the latching lid

Side view of the lid.  It includes two o-rings to provide a tight seal.  Is that enough?  You’d think so, but keep reading.

Much like their growlers, gaskets on this come off for cleaning.  That’s great.

This has a nice wide opening for easy cleaning.  This is me cleaning it with a bottle brush we have around the kitchen.

I pre-chilled the stein with some ice water prior to first use.

Filled with a tasty IPA.  I think the line is a good guide for fill level.  I filled this up to take along on a short weekend trip., thinking this would be perfect to use in the pool area.

Stanley we have a problem.  I put this in a cooler on top of a Cooler Shock ice pack.  What is that frozen substance on the ice pack??  It’s beer guys.  I tasted it and it was actually a pretty delicious frozen beer slush.  This is another testament to how awesome Cooler Shock Ice Packs are.  It was cold enough to freeze the beer.

A closer look at the gasket.  You can see where it has blown out.

After all of that, the beer is largely intact and still well carbonated.

The gasket failure was surprising to me.  I have several Stanley Growlers and I think they’re awesome.  I’ve never had a similar problem.  Not even once.  I think it may be been related to putting this right on a very cold ice pack.  My theory is that the cold caused the gasket to shrink and partially fail.  Even if that’s the cause, it shouldn’t have happened in my opinion.

Beyond that, my biggest complaint about this is the lid design.  It’s always in the way.  Maybe that goes with the territory when you’re drinking from a stein, after all this is my first stein.  I guess you’d call me a stein newby :).  Either way, I don’t like it.  It’s inconvenient and uncomfortable.  The styling and apparent build quality of this is high, just like my other Stanley items.  I was excited about the function of this, but after trying it out, I’m going to say it’s more of a display piece.
