With a shorter 1.5″ stem, this may be good for some applications.  Example – BIAB – shorter stem means less banging on the thermometer when you’re stirring the mash and help prevent torn or ripped bags.  If you’re plumbing pipes and fittings for your system, this might fit in a spot where another longer stem thermometer would not.
