Gamma Seal Lids [Hands on Review] are a great upgrade to standard buckets.  You attach the base of the unit to the bucket and leave that intact.  The lid screws on and off easily.  No more prying lids off.  These are also airtight.  I use buckets with Gamma Seal Lids as my primary storage for bulk grain and recipe kits.

How much grain can you store in a 5 gallon bucket?  My rule of thumb for grain storage capacity is 5 lbs per gallon.  With that estimate a  50 lb sack of grain fits in (2) 5 gallon buckets.  That’s an estimate and will vary.

Notes from HBF:  6″ x 3.3″ x 11.5″ = 227.7 cubic inches or about .98 gallons.  My rule of thumb on grain storage is 5 lbs per gallon.  With that estimate .98 can hold about 5 lbs of grain.  This is an estimate.  With an integrated spout and including measuring cup, I think this is a good candidate for storing specialty grains and other dry ingredients.

According to specs on the manufacture’s website model #NMP-XL has a capacity of 67 quarts.  67 quarts = 16.75 gallons.  My rule of thumb for grain storage is 5 lbs per gallon.  At that rate this would hold about 83.75 lbs of grain.  67 quarts should be able to easily hold a full 50 to 55 lb bag of grain. That’s only an estimate.

I use these exact containers for all sorts of things around the brewery and my house.  Possible homebrew uses – general storage, store smaller amounts of ingredients or smaller parts of pieces.  Since they are microwave safe you could also use these to sanitize water for the purpose of rehydrating yeast.

According to the manufacturer model 296001 has a 28 quart capacity.  My rule of thumb for grain storage is 5 lbs per gallon.  28 quarts is 7 gallons.  At 5 lbs per gallon a 7 gallon container would hold about 35 lbs of grain.  That’s only an estimate based on an assumed capacity, which may not be right.
