Tare Function: Tare allows you to subtract the weight of the container you’re using to get a true weight of the contents. Add your empty container to the scale and press the tare button. This zeros out the scale. Now add the thing you’re weighing and the scale displays just the weight of the contents of your container. In my opinion the tare function is essential for any good homebrewing scale.
Given the specs of this scale, it should work for weighing hops, water salts, smaller amounts of specialty grains (500 grams is about 17.6 ounces or just over a pound) and other brewing ingredients.

A smaller scale can work for all grain brewers, as you can weigh any amount of grain in multiple batches, but if you’re a large batch all grain brewer or regularly brew all grain batches with larger grain bills you may want to consider a two scale approach, one more precise scale for hops and a larger capacity scale for larger grain bills. A couple scales to consider:
Great Fermentations is discounting their entire lineup of recipe kits, extract and all grain, by 20%. Choices include Brain Eater (Three Floyds Zombie Dust Clone), Amarillo Face (Gumballhead), Pliny, Hearts Squared (Two Hearted Ale), Chocoholic Porter and lots more. It’s light and easy to store, most everything nests to together in the base. Includes a 520 gallon per hour pump.
I have this and like it very much. It’s one of my favorite pieces of brewing gear. It’s saved me a lot of time and hassle. Check out my Hands on Review

More About Mark's Keg and Carboy Washer
from William’s Brewing:
The Mark’s Keg & Carboy Washer II is a great way to continuously rinse carboys, kegs, and pails with sanitizing solution. It features a submersible pump that runs as long as you keep it plugged in. Fill the base (it holds a gallon) with a dilute cleansing solution such as Brewer’s Edge Cleanser or Five Star Saniclean™, put a carboy, keg, or Siphonless Fermenter on top of the unit, and turn on for 10 to 20 minutes to thoroughly wash the carboy, keg, or pail. You can put airlocks. valves, and more into the front tub on the unit, and they will be cleaned as well.
Includes adapters for cleaning tubing and complete instructions. 15” wide, 15” deep, 16” tall. We recommend the use of Brewer’s Edge Cleanser or Saniclean™ in this unit. Star San will not work due to excessive foaming. For safety, always plug into a GFI protected plug.
0 to 30 PSI Brewer’s Edge Mini Regulator from William’s Brewing w/Stainless Steel Ball Lock QD. Uses 74 gram CO2 cartridges. Those are enough to dispense a 5 gallon keg of carbonated beer. Features an integrated check valve to keep beer from flowing backwards into the regulator.
Portable Serving: As an on-the-go regulator.
Backup – I’m out of CO2 and I want to pour a beer! Use as a backup if your main CO2 tank runs out. Swap out the CO2 line for this regulator and you’ve got a temporary solution to keep you up and going until you can get more CO2.
Serve Beers at Alternate Carbonation Levels: This regulator goes up to 30 PSI. That’s plenty to serve high carbonation beers like Hefeweizens and Belgians. If you don’t have a dual or triple pressure setup, you could use this regulator to serve beers at higher pressures. I would not suggest force carbonation with this unit. The 74g cartridges would be pricey. You could carbonate using your existing regulator or just as easily naturally carbonate with priming sugar. After the beer is completely carbonated, use this to serve at the higher pressure.
As of this posting, this is selling for $74.99. A limited number of customer return units are available for $54.99. That’s a savings of $20. These are tested and said to be in excellent condition. Check William’s Brewing for current availability.
About… “Do you want to get into mashing but want something simple? The patent pending Brewer’s Edge® Mash & Boil makes it easy. No need for an outdoor burner, complicated brewing stand, or a 220 volt special circuit – it plugs into any 110 volt GFI household outlet. The Mash and Boil’s exclusive double wall stainless construction conserves heat to achieve a rolling boil with only 110 volts and 1600 watts, and its precise thermostat and internal sparging basket lets you mash and boil in the same vessel.
A typical brew day with the Mash & Boil begins with formulating your 5 gallon all grain recipe (up to 16 pounds of crushed grain can be mashed), and then heating your strike water to 162° F, the preset heat temperature. After 40 minutes or so, your strike water is 162° F, and you mix your crushed grain into the sparging basket already inside the Mash and Boil. The mash will cool to 152° or so, and then you set your thermostat to 150°, cover, and let mash for 1 hour. During this mash time you will need to separately heat 3 gallons of sparge water to 175° in a separate pot you provide. A thermometer hole is provided in the lid, in case you want to monitor the temperature of the top of the mash with any long probe analog or digital thermometer.
After one hour, lift the sparging bucket and lock on its included legs, and let the malt sugar drip into your Mash & Boil, which has now became a boiling pot. Turn the thermostat up to 218° F. and give it about 40 minutes to heat to a boil. During this time, ladle one gallon of hot sparge water at a time into the top of the sparging basket until you get to 5½ gallons. Now remove the grain basket, and when the boil begins, add your hops as per your recipe. Boil for 1 hour, and then cool with a suitable wort chiller (not included, our item E81 works well as does any immersion chiller that is up to 11″ in diameter). Or use the stainless valve with ½” hose barb to run the wort through your external chiller.
The Mash & Boil features an adjustable thermostat (switchable from Fahrenheit to Centigrade) with an adjustable run time preset at 3½ hours for safety. It also features a delayed start timer, so you can program the Mash and Boil to turn on up to 24 hours after setting. For example, load it with strike water, and have it set to be hot when you come home from work to save time. Intended for 5 gallon batches, maximum capacity is 7½ gallons. 28” tall closed, 40” tall with basket, 14” wide. A 5′ power cord is included.”
