MoreBeer Sterile Siphon Starter – $13.95

Sterile Siphon Starter from MoreBeer

Sterile Siphon Includes:

  • 26 inch Stainless Racking Cane
  • Red Sediment Reduction Tip
  • Rubber Carboy Blowoff Hood w/White Caps (3, 5, 6, 6.5 Gallon smooth neck)
  • 5′ of 3/8″ ID Vinyl Tubing
  • Stainless Hose Clamp
  • Sterile Air Filter

I have this and it works really well.  You blow into the sterile filter to start a siphon. The air that’s drawn in through the filter during siphoning is sterile.  You can siphon beer or cleaning/sanitizing solution.  If you siphon sanitizer, you’re left with a sanitized carboy and filtered air.

I assume the hood was tight on a 6.5 gal glass carboy since I was getting a huge amount of resistance to blowing more air in but no flow of liquid out. Even without the sterile filter in place there was no way I could blow hard enough to get a siphon started.

Hmmm…. mine has worked great for me. I wonder if it has something to do with how tight the carboy hood is. The are a number of carboy sizes. If the cap wasn’t tight then you would certainly have problems.

Seconded. I got one of these because it sounded great. It doesn’t work at all for me. Spend your money on an auto-siphon instead.

I have a setup similar to this. Its the same setup purchased separately. I hate it. I have a stainless racking cane, a filter, all this crap.

You know what works the best? An auto siphon. Life is so much better with an auto siphon. Just get one. I really hated using this.

The carboy cap isn’t air tight. In fact, it leaks quite a bit. So you pop a lung blowing. Then you get so much slobber and spittle into the filter that it’s now ineffective.

It’s a nice idea that is crap in practice.
