Thermometer Smackdown! - $4 eBay Thermometer vs ThermoWorks RT600C

I picked up an economy thermometer off of eBay the other day and wanted to give it a go around.  I used my ThermoWorks RT600C for comparison.

Delivery speed:  I ordered this from eBay seller tang-art on October 16th.  It shipped directly from China.  I received it on October 24th.  I would say 8 days is pretty speedy delivery.

Accuracy:  As you can see from the picture above, this ran pretty close to the RT600C.  As you can imagine, a glass of ice water is not at an even temperature throughout.  At times, the two thermometers did vary.  This was usually around .2 (2/10ths) to .5 (5/10ths) of a degree.  I'm very happy with the accuracy of this thermometer.  I did find that you really need to submerge most of the thermometer probe to get an accurate reading.  With the RT600C, you only need to submerge 1/4" of the tip.

Response Time:  I used the highly scientific "one-one thousand " measuring system.  I found the RT600C to hit just about dead on the stated specs.. around 5 seconds.  The $4 thermometer seemed to take around 15 seconds to settle in.

Build Quality:  The ThermoWorks RT600C feels well built.  This thing is rated to run through a dishwasher.  I can't say the same for the $4 thermometer.  It feels okay, but I wouldn't suggest submerging this puppy, in fact, I would suggest keeping the body of this thermometer dry.

Bottom Line:  For $4 or so shipped from China, this thing is a steal.  I'm happy to have it as a backup unit.  If you're on a tight budget, I'd go for it.  Also, if you're looking for a spare, it makes a lot of sense.  If you don't fit into those two categories, I'd pickup something like the RT600C.

Warm water test, bam.. right on the money

Getting goofy... I threw my Taylor 9842 in for crazy fun.  It's reading from the other side of the glass, so I'm not super concerned about the 1 degree difference the Taylor is showing.
