Follow Up: Hands on with the Perlick Flow Control Faucet

Flow control faucets allow you adjust the resistance of the faucet.  Why would you want to do this?  You would want to do this in order to serve more highly carbonated beers without foaming issues.  Higher carbonation beers require more pressure.  That pressure needs to be offset by resistance before the beer hits the air.  You can do this by adding more tubing or by adding a flow control device.

You may also benefit from a flow control faucet if you just want to reduce the amount of tubing in your kegerator.

Prior to getting the faucet, I had two main concerns.  One was that the faucet would not fit on my standard shank.  The other was that the faucet would overshoot my drip tray.

I'm very happy to report that neither concern was an issue.

The faucet works great with my standard shank... yay!  No installation issues at all.  It is designed to work with standard shanks and it goes on easily.

As you can see from the pictures below, the faucet doesn't stick out much further than a standard Perlick forward seal.  It sticks out just a bit further and is a bit lower.  Not much at all and much, much better than my European flow control faucet on the right.

Adjustment of the resistance does not require a tool with the handy knob on the right side and it's forward sealing!  My European flow control regularly sticks.

Update:  I've been happily using this faucet since December of 2011.  It works great for flow control and serving higher carbonation beers.

One tip that I can share after using this for nearly a year is... if you have a heavily dry hopped beer, work to get a clean transfer over to your keg.  On one occasion, I pulled a bit too much hop matter into the keg.  The flow control mechanism means there is a narrower path for beer and as a result it clogs more easily.

If you are using this for higher carbonation Belgian or German beers, this shouldn't be an issue at all because these generally aren't going to be dry hopped.  If you are using this for a heavily dry hopped beer, just put a little extra effort into leaving hop material behind.

Overall... this has been a great faucet!

  2. Is that a stout faucet on the right? Would you mind detailing which one?

    1. On the top picture. The leftmost faucet is the Perlick Flow Control Forward Sealing, The next two are Perlick Forward Sealing Faucets and the one to the far right is a european style flow control faucet. It is not a stout faucet.

    2. What is the point in the drip try that is not in a position to catch drips?

    3. There would be no point in that. My drip tray is in a position to catch drips for all faucets. If you're talking about the appearance of the leftmost faucet in the bottom picture. It's just the angle of the picture that's making it look that way.
