Hop Harvest Time - Getting Ready for Bulk Hop Buys

Hop harvest time will soon be on us.  That means great deals on last years hops and a great time (maybe your only time) to jump on hard to get hop varieties.

Make sure you have the right gear on hand to split up, package and store those bulk buys.

I think you need... an accurate gram scale, a vacuum sealer and vacuum bags

Gram Scale:
1/10th of a gram precision.  500 gram capacity.  Great for accurately weighing hops and water salt additions.  Read my hands on review of this scale- here

Vacuum Sealer:
Vacuum sealers are indispensable for storing hops.  I've also preserved base and specialty grains and other brewing ingredients.  Check out the tips page for a technique to save dry yeast and techniques for storing hops in mylar bags.

Vacuum Bags:
These are a Top Find and the best value I know for bulk vacuum bags.

  1. I recommend the foodsaver and the mason jar attachment. A 1-quart mason jar perfectly holds one pound of hops and is way easier to use than trying to cut up a bag into a bunch of little bags, or resealing one big bag.
